The Belize City Council has launched its second annual hurricane cleanup campaign, with officials moving through flood-prone areas across the city as the Atlantic hurricane season approaches.

Deputy Mayor Elude Miller said more than 130 council staff turned out for the effort, covering a wide range of departments, including sanitation, public health and works teams. Health inspectors also went door to door, speaking with residents about waste management, drainage and what individuals can do to help keep the city’s drainage system working during heavy rain.

This year’s campaign is targeting seven areas, including Victoria Street, Vernon Street, Mahogany Street, the area around St. Mary’s Primary School, Gabriel Lane, and St. Joseph Street.

Miller said the selection of areas is based on mapping carried out throughout the year, focusing on known flood-prone zones. Last year’s cleanup covered Pangyard, King Street, Dean Street, and Berkeley Street.

The council also brought out specialised equipment for the job, including a vacuum truck and sewer jet sweeper, to clear drains and improve flood resilience.

Miller said residents have responded positively so far. “It’s been very welcoming… I just spoke to Ms Judith upstairs just now, and she’s telling me she’s really grateful for having us on the ground and being present,” he said, adding that residents have also been sharing suggestions with the teams.
