Belizean Crime Scene Investigators Get a Look at How Europe Solves Crimes

Twenty‑two police and forensic officers from across the Caribbean spent this week in Spain and France, learning how European law enforcement handles crime scene investigations.

Belize was represented by a crime scene investigator from the National Forensic Science Service (NFSS) and an officer from the Belize Police Department. Their participation was sponsored through the PACE Justice Project, implemented by UNDP Belize with funding from the European Union.

The study visit, held from May 17 to 23, built on advanced training delivered in Barbados last year. During the visit, participants met with European law enforcement and forensic experts to examine how major investigations are carried out overseas and how technology is changing police work.

Among the tools explored were artificial intelligence systems, virtual reality technology and Geographic Information Systems, commonly known as GIS, which are increasingly being used to map crime scenes, analyse evidence and strengthen investigations.

The training comes at a time when public pressure is mounting for stronger investigations and higher conviction rates in Belize’s major criminal cases. The NFSS said in a statement that programmes like this ensure “Belize’s Criminal Justice System can increase its reliance on sound scientific evidence for the investigation and prosecution of criminal offences.”
