Hundreds Join Annual Cancer Walk in Belize

Hundreds of Belizeans were up before sunrise Saturday for the annual Cancer Walk, making their way from Ladyville to Belize City in a show of solidarity with those affected by the disease.

The walk began at 5:00 a.m. in Ladyville and ended at the Society’s headquarters in Belize City. Participants from across the country turned out in neon colours, creating a vibrant show of solidarity under this year’s theme: “Early Detection. Equal Access. End Cancer.”

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in Belize, and health advocates consistently point to late diagnosis as one of the biggest factors driving poor outcomes. The earlier cancer is caught, the better the chances of survival, a message the Society has been working to drive home through events like Saturday’s walk.

The Belize Cancer Society is a non-profit organisation that provides education, advocacy and direct support to cancer patients across the country. The annual walk is one of its primary fundraising and awareness events of the year and is hosted in a few locations across the country.
