Woman Dies in Motorcycle Crash, Partner Refused Alcohol Test
Police have served 32-year-old Coast Guard Melvin Quischan with a notice of intended prosecution as investigations continue into the death of his 49-year-old common-law-wife, Auria Ramos.
The crash happened shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday in Santa Familia Village, Cayo. Officers responding to the scene found Quischan sitting on the road with minor injuries while holding Ramos, who was complaining of chest pain.
BERT personnel rushed Ramos for medical treatment, but she later died from her injuries.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith said both were travelling on a Lifan motorcycle when Quischan allegedly “lost control of the motorcycle and veered off-road”.
“The responding officers reported that they in fact smelt the aroma of alcohol, and that was one of the reasons why a sample was requested from him,” ASP Smith said. Quischan reportedly refused to comply.
Smith added that refusing to provide a sample is also an offence. “There are a litany of charges that are being considered at this point in time,” Smith said. “However, there are certain processes that have to be taken before we reach that point.”
