Kingmaker Moment? Mahler Weighs in on City Mayoral Race

With a key political race taking shape in Belize City, attention is turning to one man whose backing could tip the scales. Two young contenders, Eluide Miller and Allan Pollard, are set to face off in the PUP mayoral convention. But where does Pickstock Area Representative Anthony Mahler stand? Widely seen as a major influencer in city politics, Mahler’s support could prove decisive. We asked him today, here’s what he had to say.

“Well I won’t say my support publicly, but I think it is healthy democracy. We have two young aspirants who have energy and who are creative. And then we will see where that goes. But I cant say that publicly right now. I have to get the full support of my executive to see where we will go”

“You don’t consider that it is Allan Pollard’s time? There is something that happened in the last election where he was ready to run and he was asked to step aside. So its never going to be his time.”

“I think that is a loaded question. They told Barrack Obama that it was not his time and it was his time and it became his time. So if you really want something you will go for it. They said that to me in the past that it is not your time either, go somewhere else or do this. And you saw right, the next candidate or the next few candidates who want to come, lets go to a convention and lets see where that ends up.”

Reports suggest City Administrator Candice Pitts may also be eyeing the post, but she hasn’t confirmed or denied it.
