‘Please Come to Chetumal’: Mexico Ambassador Addresses Safety Fears

Mexico’s newly appointed ambassador to Belize is telling Belizeans to not let recent security concerns in Mexico stop them from visiting the country. Ana Luisa Vallejo Barba addressed those safety concerns head-on during her appearance on Open Your Eyes this morning.

“Please come again to Chetumal. It’s safe, and everybody’s waiting for you,” Vallejo Barba said.

While she recognised that security remains a challenge in several states of the country, she said the Mexican government has reinforced security, particularly in the southern part of Mexico.

The security concerns are heavily rooted in increasing cartel activity that only exploded after the “disastrous” capture of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”.

The ambassador said the situation on the ground tells a different story since security was reinforced. According to her, fake news exaggerated the situation, and the Mencho case was an isolated crisis that lasted a single day.

Vallejo Barba said the relationship between Belize and Mexico when it comes to security cooperation is strong, with multiple measures for intelligence sharing and capacity building, including joint commanders’ meetings held every six months.
