Give Blood, Save Lives: Observing World Blood Donor Day
A Lifesaving Gift That Only Humans Can Give
On today’s episode of Open Your Eyes, the focus was on World Blood Donor Day and the critical role voluntary blood donors play in saving lives. Joining the discussion were Ronald Stewart, President of the Belize Voluntary Blood Donors Association, Nurse Doreen Madril, and Blood Bank Supervisor Adrian Martinez, who emphasized the ongoing need for blood donations across Belize.
The guests highlighted that blood remains one of the few medical resources that cannot be manufactured or replaced. Every unit must come from a willing donor, making public awareness and regular donations essential to maintaining a reliable blood supply for patients in need. They also encouraged Belizeans to learn their blood type and consider becoming regular donors.

Supporting Patients Across the Country
The discussion explored the many situations where blood is needed, including emergency surgeries, road traffic accidents, cancer treatments, and care for patients with sickle cell disease. Martinez explained that blood collected at the national blood bank is tested using advanced technology before being distributed to both public and private healthcare facilities throughout the country.
The guests also addressed common concerns about donating blood, noting that eligibility depends on factors such as health status, medications, and travel history. They stressed that the donation process is simple and safe, while encouraging individuals not to wait until a loved one is in need before becoming involved.
Celebrating Belize’s Dedicated Blood Donors
A special tribute was paid to Belize’s voluntary blood donors, whose contributions help sustain the national blood supply year-round. Stewart, who has been donating blood for nearly 32 years, shared his passion for encouraging others to donate and highlighted the importance of making blood donation a regular habit rather than a response to emergencies.
Nurse Madril and Martinez also recognized the efforts of blood bank staff and volunteers who work behind the scenes to collect, process, test, and distribute blood. They reminded viewers that a single donation can save multiple lives and encouraged more young people to become donors as soon as they are eligible.
Observing World Blood Donor Day
As part of this year’s observance, the Blood Bank and the Belize Voluntary Blood Donors Association are hosting activities to recognize and thank donors for their contributions. The guests described blood donation as an act of humanity and solidarity, emphasizing that today’s donor could become tomorrow’s recipient.
With the slogan, “One Drop of Humanity, Give Blood, Save Lives,” the message was clear: maintaining an adequate blood supply requires collective effort. Belizeans were encouraged to donate regularly, recruit new donors, and help ensure that lifesaving blood remains available for those who need it most.
