Khalid Belisle Calls Out Mira Family’s Alleged Belmopan Land Grab
Tonight, the controversy surrounding the Mira family is taking a new turn, shifting from contracts to land. Concerns are now being raised about public property on the outskirts of Belmopan, where former mayor Khalid Belisle says several parcels appear to be in the hands of relatives of Area Representative Oscar Mira. The area was once earmarked for industrial development, but Belisle says the pattern raises questions and deserves a closer look. While he stops short of alleging wrongdoing, he’s calling on government to be transparent about how these lands were acquired.

“I have seen reports of course that several direct family members of our area rep including him himself have come into possession of lands in what was originally designated as an industrial zone. I believe if my memory serve me right, it was a little over thirty one acre parcels in the very extreme east of the city. Actually, the land borders the Belmopan city boundary near to the new Belmopan cemetery. We’ve been told that there is no longer any land in Belmopan for distribution, or I see people co- complaining on social media all the time about that. So if that is the case, then, I suppose the wider public has a right to have expected that others would have been maybe put in the queue ahead of ahead of maybe the minister’s direct circle or very close inner circle, no? I commend the efforts of the leader of the opposition, my party leader, the Honorable Tracy Taegar Panton, to seek out this information via Freedom of Information Act request. And so we look forward to seeing what the f- full story is. I’m not going to rush in to pass judgment. I would only go as far as piggybacking on what the current CEO in the Ministry of Defense said. I’m paraphrasing him here. The optics of it is not exactly where you would want it to be.”
