Why are the BDF and the University of Belize Teaming Up?

The University of Belize and the Belize Defence Force have formalised a partnership that puts soldiers in classrooms and military officers on the sports field. Both institutions signed a memorandum of understanding this morning in Belmopan.

The agreement opens scholarship opportunities for BDF soldiers across UB’s full range of programmes, from associate degrees to master’s degrees, while two full-time BDF officers will be deployed to UB to support physical training, wellness, discipline, and athletic development for student athletes.

UB President Dr Vincent Palacio said the response from athlete students when he previewed the partnership a month ago was welcomed with a “burst of applause”.

“When I told them [athletes] that we’ll be maybe getting two BDF officers to assist with the sports programme, they burst out in applause. They’re excited; they’re looking forward to it. So that motivates me even more,” Palacio said. “This reflects our commitment to expanding the educational opportunities and supporting the professional growth of those who serve our country.”

The MoU also includes joint academic programmes focused on national security and defence.
