Belize Suspends Postal Shipments of Goods to EU
Belizeans will no longer be able to send parcels containing goods to countries in the European Union through the Belize Postal Service after new European Union import regulations prompted a temporary suspension of the service.
The Belize Postal Service announced today that, effective immediately, it has suspended the acceptance and processing of all postal shipments containing goods destined for EU member states. The move follows recent changes to the European Union’s import rules, including the elimination of the duty-free de minimis threshold for imported goods, which has introduced new customs clearance and taxation requirements for international mail.
According to the Postal Service, it is awaiting official operational guidance from the Universal Postal Union (UPU) before it can resume accepting these shipments.
In the meantime, customers planning to send merchandise to any European Union country are being advised to delay their shipments until further notice. However, postal items containing goods that were accepted before Tuesday’s announcement will continue to be processed under the existing procedures where applicable.
The Belize Postal Service says it is working closely with its international postal partners and the Universal Postal Union to implement the new requirements and restore normal service as quickly as possible.
