A Solar-Powered Water System?
Pomona Village in the Stann Creek District now has an independent, solar-powered water system designed to end years of dry-season water shortages. The Ministry of Rural Transformation (MRT) officially commissioned the expanded system on Saturday.
The new infrastructure includes a 40,000-litre ground-level reservoir, a newly built pump house and a backup diesel generator to ensure water continues to flow during power outages. The expansion complements the village’s existing network, which officials say has long struggled to meet demand for the village and neighbouring communities during the dry season.
“By integrating this advanced setup into the network, the project directly alleviates pressure on the old system, ensuring a reliable water supply to households even during peak dry periods,” the ministry said in a statement.
The project also delivered pipes, fittings and other plumbing materials to Pomona’s local water board to support future expansion of the village’s water network.
“This crucial resource will empower the local water board to actively manage and facilitate the ongoing growth and expansion of Pomona Village,” MRT added.
