Alleged Shooter Remanded in Alonzo Myers’ Attempted Murder Case

A man who survived a late-night shooting on Mud Street has now helped police put one of his alleged attackers behind bars. Twenty-two-year-old Oscar Ervin Gonguez, an undertaker from Curl Thompson Street, was arraigned on Monday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for attempted murder, dangerous harm, and use of deadly means of harm. Police say the charges stem from a May twenty-second attack in the Jane Usher Boulevard area, where twenty-year-old Alonzo Nigel Myers was shot while closing the gate at his home. Investigators say two men ran up and opened fire before escaping. Myers was rushed to the KHMH in critical condition, but survived. Police later recorded a statement from him in which he reportedly identified Gonguez as one of the shooters. Gonguez was detained last week and formally charged. Because of the serious nature of the offenses, the court denied bail and remanded him to the Belize Central Prison until September twenty-fourth.
