After 24 Years, Belize Central Prison Gets a New CEO
The Belize Central Prison has a new chief executive after 24 years. George Gomez officially took the helm of the Kolbe Foundation on 19th May 2026. He takes over from Virgilio Murillo, who led the organisation for nearly a quarter of a century.
The Kolbe Foundation manages the Belize Central Prison under a public-private partnership arrangement with the government.
The Ministry of Home Affairs and Enterprise and the Kolbe Foundation Board credited Murillo with transforming the Belize Central Prison during his tenure. Meanwhile, Gomez steps into the role with a focus on rehabilitation and reintegration.
The handover marks the end of a four-month transition process. Murillo, now designated CEO Emeritus, will remain connected to the foundation as Special Advisor to the Board of Directors.
