Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister, Promises Political Reset and Stability

Andy Burnham has become the United Kingdom’s seventh prime minister in a decade, pledging to restore stability and deliver what he called the biggest changes in British politics in 40 years.

Burnham formally took office on Monday after meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, following the departure of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who ended one of the shortest Labour premierships in British history.

In his first address outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham said his government would focus on rebuilding trust in politics and making government work better for the British people. “Britain needs to show the world that we can regain our stability once again,” Burnham said.

The new prime minister also pledged to end rough sleeping in the United Kingdom and reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to its international defence partnerships.

Burnham’s appointment comes after a period of political turmoil for the Labour Party, with several senior members of Starmer’s cabinet announcing their departures ahead of the new government’s reshuffle.

He has also pledged major reforms in housing, education and social care, including what he described as the largest social housing programme since the post-war era.

Internationally, Burnham faces immediate challenges, including managing Britain’s relationship with United States President Donald Trump. Trump congratulated Burnham after previously criticising former Prime Minister Keir Starmer and praising Burnham’s position on expanding North Sea oil and gas production.
