WestJet Launching Winnipeg-Belize Nonstop Flight
WestJet is set to launch a new nonstop route connecting Winnipeg and Belize City starting December 14th. The new flight option will operate once a week between Winnipeg Richardson International Airport and Philip Goldson International Airport. With this, Canadians will have yet another direct flight to escape the cold and enjoy the Jewel of the Caribbean.
Belize will now have access to three Canadian cities via direct flights. The addition means flyers are no longer forced to transfer through Calgary, Toronto or the United States. The expansion comes in response to an increasing demand for access to countries like Belize and Mexico where Canadians can cast off the cold and find comfort in warmer waters.
John Weatherill, WestJet’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer, said, “These additions support the growing demand for options in Mexico and the Latin Caribbean while sustainably expanding our schedule and managing our fleet during the peak winter travel season.”
The inclusion of this new route has the added benefit of strengthening relations between Belize and Canada. Improved accessibility means more tourism and potentially more investment. Beyond that, it’s a show of faith in the continued development of Belize by both those who call it home and those who occasionally explore our shores. Anthony Mahler, Belize’s minister of tourism, youth, sport and diaspora relations, had this to say, “The launch of WestJet’s new Winnipeg–Belize City service is an important step in strengthening air connectivity between Canada and Belize and a strong sign of confidence in our destination’s continued growth. ”
