Are Trump’s Threats Undermining Iran’s Peace Negotiations?

High‑level talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland ended Monday with both sides agreeing on a roadmap to reach a final peace deal within 60 days.

The negotiations faced several tense moments. At one point, Iran threatened to walk away from the talks after Trump posted on Truth Social, warning that the United States would strike Iran “very hard” unless it stopped supporting “PROXIES in Lebanon“.

In a Fox News interview, Trump also said he would “blow the hell out of Iran” if the Strait was shut again. Iran’s Foreign Minister later cautioned that direct talks could end if threats from Washington continue.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who led the American delegation, defended Trump’s remarks, saying the president was responding to what he called “trash talk” from Iran.

Despite the tensions, Vance said the talks produced meaningful progress. “We laid a very good foundation for a successful final deal… We haven’t built the house, but we’ve laid a successful foundation.”

The negotiations, which lasted about 18 hours, focused on several key issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, economic sanctions, regional security, and efforts to end fighting in Lebanon.

One of the major outcomes was the creation of a High-Level Committee that will oversee continued negotiations and guide technical discussions over the next two months. The two countries also agreed to establish direct communication channels to prevent misunderstandings and help keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

The talks also reportedly secured Iran’s agreement to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency back into the country.
