Beach Cleanups Gain Momentum Amid Sargassum Surge

A San Pedro tour guide is calling on residents to step up and join regular beach cleanups, as sargassum continues to pile up along the island’s coastline. Oscar Iboy, a member of San Pedro Citizens for Change, says the initiative began after he joined a small cleanup near the high school and decided to expand it when turnout was low. He said participation has been modest but is gradually increasing, rising from about 13 volunteers in the first cleanup to around 20 in the most recent. The group plans to continue organizing cleanups every other Sunday and is urging residents and businesses to get involved.

With tourism struggling and many tour guides out of work, Iboy suggests the Town Council consider paid cleanup work for locals, helping residents earn income while improving the island’s image.
