Belize Awaits Answers in Kennedy Carillo Investigation

Belize’s diplomatic representative in Canada remains under investigation, but officials here say they are still waiting for Canadian authorities to provide answers. Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca says there has been no further update from Toronto in the case involving Kennedy Carillo, Belize’s Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization. In late July, the government partially waived Carillo’s diplomatic immunity, clearing the way for Canadian authorities to investigate an alleged domestic dispute. For now, however, Fonseca says Belize cannot determine its next move until the official report is received.

“No update as yet. We we are awaiting a further report from the authorities in the Canada, in Toronto. I think the metropolitan police are doing an investigation. We’re awaiting that report. As soon as we receive it then we’ll be able to review it and discuss it and make whatever decisions are required.”

Government says safety measures are in place, cooperation continues, and gender-based violence will not be tolerated.
