Orange Walk Undergoing Transformation Through IDB Projects

Orange Walk Town is set for a facelift as several major infrastructure projects get underway across the municipality. Funded through an IDB-supported development program, the initiatives include upgrades to Main Street, expansion of the town market, and the construction of a new river walk along the New River. Orange Walk East Area Representative, Kevin Bernbard explained today that the projects are aimed at modernizing the town for residents and visitors.

“I know in Orange Walk, the, the upgrading  of the main street, or as we call Main Street, that will have sidewalks and all of that. There’s also the River Walk project which it’s part of it is in my constituency, and it goes all the way to the river walk behind the School, the development of the riverside. And then we also have the market expansion project, which is also part of that. So there’s a huge level of work.  I understand that next week that River Walk project is commencing. The IDB has already awarded the contracts for that. I am not too sure if the contract award has been awarded for the market construction. I know that there have been, where vendors who were in the market expansion area have already been relocated temporarily to the barracks until that project is completed, which I’m pretty sure may start sometime until next year because there have been some delays in terms of some final adjustments that needed to be made according to what I got. I’m not a part of any committee or discussion of that. I’m no longer part of the council, but from the updates I got from through the mayor when I spoke to him briefly he has been providing us with updates in terms of what we’re doing in terms of that project.”

 

Bernard says northern municipalities, including Orange Walk, Corozal and San Pedro, have benefited from an IDB-supported development initiative aimed at improving infrastructure and public spaces.
