Keeping Young People Active All Summer Long

The Belize City Council is once again rolling out a full lineup of free summer programs designed to keep children active, engaged, and learning throughout the school break. On today’s episode of Open Your Eyes, Program Manager Michael Fritz, Communications Manager Michelle Smith, and Marketing Manager Melicia McDougall shared details about the Council’s youth initiatives and upcoming FIFA World Cup celebrations.

The Council has already launched its Peewee Basketball Camp at Berger Field for children ages 7 to 12. More than just basketball, the month-long program focuses on teamwork, discipline, and skill development under the guidance of veteran coach Rosco Reese and members of the Belize City Dragons basketball team. The program will conclude with a fundraiser supporting the Council’s annual back-to-school initiative.

Free Educational and Wellness Programs

Recognizing that summer should also be a time for academic growth, the Belize City Council is introducing free Back-to-Basics Math and English classes for students entering Standard Five and Standard Six. Hosted at the Youth Connect Student Hub inside City Hall, the program aims to provide quality educational support for families who may not otherwise be able to afford tutoring.

The Council is also expanding its popular Youth Connect Summer Blast, offering activities that include arts and crafts, gardening, mindfulness, and introductory yoga. Organizers noted that demand has been overwhelming, with some programs reaching capacity shortly after registration opened. All summer camps are being offered free of charge, reinforcing the Council’s commitment to making youth development opportunities accessible to every family.

Digi Park Becomes Belize City’s World Cup Headquarters

Beyond its youth programs, the Belize City Council is partnering with Coca-Cola to transform Digi Park into a community hub for FIFA World Cup fans.

On Saturday, July 11, football supporters can enjoy a free double-header watch party featuring quarterfinal matches beginning at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The games will be shown on a giant LED screen, creating a stadium-like atmosphere in the heart of Belize City.

The event will include seating, shaded areas, interactive games, giveaways, and family-friendly entertainment. Organizers encourage attendees to wear their favorite team’s jersey, arrive early, and enjoy a full day of football festivities.

Supporting Local Businesses While Bringing Communities Together

The World Cup celebration will also provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Nearly 30 vendors have signed up to participate, offering a variety of Belizean food and refreshments throughout the day. Streets surrounding Digi Park will be closed early Saturday morning to allow vendors to set up and create a lively festival atmosphere.

One unique feature of the event will be the Council’s “Windows to the World” activation, connecting Belize City with its sister city of Miramar, Florida, through a live digital portal. Residents from both cities will be able to interact in real time while celebrating the World Cup together, adding an international element to the community event.

With free admission, family-friendly activities, and a full day of football, food, and entertainment, the Belize City Council is inviting residents from across the city to come together and celebrate one of the world’s biggest sporting events while enjoying everything Belize’s community spirit has to offer.
