Belize, Mexico Deliver Humanitarian Aid to Cuba

Last week, Belize and Mexico joined forces to deliver a major shipment of humanitarian aid to Cuba. Mexican Ambassador to Belize, Ana Luisa Vallejo Barba, said Mexico will continue supporting the island amid the impact of U.S. energy sanctions. The vessel transported 1,700 tons of food and other relief supplies as Cuba grapples with one of the most severe economic crises in its recent history.

“As we see it, we are facing a crisis, a humanitarian crisis and we always help in this situation, and it was important to share with you this embark that we had yesterday and it arrived on Sunday. We have been working with Caribbean countries and Belize to get this help arrive directly to the population and we always have a very strong position to Cuba to attend this situation as a humanitarian crisis?”

“But how concerned is your government about pushback from the US because of this position?”

Ana Luisa Vallejo Barba

“It is a position we have had forever. Mexico is the only country that was against the expulsion of Cuba from the Summit of the Americas and we have been in this strong position forever and we will continue.”

Cuba continues to grapple with severe economic hardship in the face of the ongoing energy blockade.
