Belizean Girls Step Up to Lead in Tech

Belizean girls are stepping into tech with confidence, as the “Lead Like a Girl” initiative returns bigger and more energetic in its fourth year.

One hundred and forty students from thirty-five high schools are diving into coding, games and digital challenges, turning curiosity into real career ambition. What began as a small effort is now gaining national momentum, giving young women a space to explore a field many once overlooked.

Director of Science and Technology, Namrita Balani, says the growth reflects rising interest and stronger support systems, including scholarships and community involvement.

But data shows boys continue to outpace girls in digital use, particularly between ages fifteen and twenty-four.

However, during his address, UNICEF Representative Sajid Ali called on the girl participants to see themselves as the next generation of innovators and decision-makers.

“Someone sitting in this room, she is the next innovator. She’s definitely from Belize. And she could be you,” he said.

Tune in to News 5 tonight at 6 o’clock to hear from the young women already turning this opportunity into a future in tech.
