BermudAir Charts New Route from North Carolina to Belize

A new direct route could soon make it even easier for travelers to trade chilly weather for Belize’s sunshine. BermudAir has announced plans to launch nonstop flights between Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina and Belize starting in December 2026. The seasonal service will run twice weekly, from December twentieth through May second, targeting peak travel demand from those looking to escape the cold. Today, we caught up with Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler to get his take on this latest development.

“We have been in talks with BermudAir for some time now. The original discussion was about to flag the plane Belize Air or whatever we wanted it to be named and we have been talking about multiply destinations, the United States, Guatemala and maybe one more. I think they announced earlier than we had anticipated. We wanted some more time to look at their proposal and what we have been asking. But they are very much interested in Belize. They are a premium carrier and Belize fits their model and so I am excited to see where it ends up. But we have quite a way to go in finalizing that arrangement.”

Airlines Exit, Opportunities Arrive: Mahler Remains Optimistic

The airline landscape in Belize is shifting, and not without its challenges. While the new BermudAir route offers fresh opportunity, recent departures by Spirit Airlines and JetBlue have raised concerns about the industry’s stability. Still, Minister Anthony Mahler remains optimistic, brushing it off as part of the business. He says government is actively in talks with other carriers, working to keep Belize connected and competitive.

“These are trying times for the entire industry. I expect to see more Spirit Airline what happened to them occur throughout. I see some already happening in the Caribbean. But we continue to do our work. You lose some and you gain some and I believe another airline will increase its capacity to Belize. We are talking to current airlines we have to expand out of new cities. I cant say these things publicly before it is announced. We have at least four or five new routes, separate from the BermudAir routes we are discussing. So, that has been one of our primary goals, our energy has been spent on going after airlift and coupled with trying to get more quality hotel rooms into the country.”

Mahler says tourist arrival numbers continue to increase, despite current airline challenges.
