Beyond the Border Dispute, PM Attends Bilateral Meeting in Honduras

Despite an ongoing territorial claim before the International Court of Justice, Belize and Honduras are signaling a willingness to work closer together on issues that affect both nations. Fresh from a state visit to Honduras, Prime Minister John Briceño says discussions with newly elected President Nasry Asfura focused on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as health, security, trade and regional development. With Belize currently leading the Central American Integration System, or SICA, the talks also highlighted the importance of building stronger partnerships across the region. Here’s what the Prime Minister had to say about the meeting and the path forward for both countries.

“It is a great pleasure to be here visiting the President and to discuss ways we can continue to strengthen the relationship between Belize and Honduras. We have many Hondurans who have made Belize their home. They are now Belizeans so for us it is very important to be here today. I believe there are many opportunities between the two countries in health especially in trade and obviously in searching ways in which we can strengthen the relations between SICA and the Caribbean.”

 

Belize’s delegation headed by Prime Minister Briceño included Minister of Health Kevin Bernard and Chief Executive Officers from the Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
