BlackOutBTL: Trade Unions Begin Fight Against Acquisition

Workers and concerned Belizeans are being asked to wear black this Friday as the National Trade Union Congress of Belize launches the first phase of its opposition to the proposed acquisition of Speednet by Belize Telemedia Limited. The NTUCB is calling on workers, union members and all Belizeans who share its concerns to wear black as a peaceful demonstration against the proposed deal. The union says this is about more than two telecommunications companies. It says the acquisition could have implications for workers, consumers, competition and investments in Belize. The NTUCB says it is particularly concerned about the potential impact on communication workers’ jobs. The campaign is being promoted under the message: “Wear Black. Stand Together. Let Our Voices Be Heard.” The union is also encouraging participants to take photographs and share them on social media using the hashtag BlackOutBTL. NTUCB President Ella Waight says Friday’s action is only the first phase of its efforts to demonstrate opposition to the proposed acquisition.
