Brother Rejects Aggressor Claims Against Wilson Hernandez

The family of businessman Wilson Hernandez is demanding justice after he was fatally shot during a domestic dispute in Belmopan on Sunday, August 31. Hernandez was involved in a heated argument with his common-law wife, Dalia Vellos, that same morning.

According to Wilson’s brother, Brian Matute, the couple “had a conflict with each other, nothing aggressive, nothing in the way of a violent way; it’s just that he was approaching her to get his car keys.”

Police reported that Vellos, who holds a firearm licence, handed her gun to 21-year-old Christy Guzman, who then fired a single fatal shot at Wilson.

On Monday, August 8, Guzman was formally charged with manslaughter. She was arraigned and denied bail due to the seriousness of the charge.

Matute says the charge of manslaughter against Guzman is not enough and is demanding full justice for his sibling.

According to Matute, the surveillance video obtained by investigators and later circulated on social media is portraying his brother as an aggressor. He rejected that claim, saying, “People are saying he was an aggressive guy, that he was already attacking her, but people don’t know anything.”

Matute describes his brother as a “humble person; he’s not a person that gives trouble. He keeps to himself and takes care of his children.”

In an interview with News 5 on September 1, Wilson’s mother, Blanca Hernandez, who was present at the time of the shooting, also maintained that her son did not assault the women. She described the argument as tense but denied that it escalated into physical violence.

Matute told News 5 that the family was not aware of domestic problems between the couple. He called Belize’s justice system “weak” and confirmed they will be “pushing harder to get our justice.”

He added, “We are mourning; we did not expect something like this to happen to our family.”
