Business Community Pushes Government for Fuel Price Relief

Belize’s business community is pressing for relief at the pump tonight. The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry is calling on government to do more to ease the burden of rising fuel costs, even as officials move toward greater transparency in fuel pricing. In a follow-up letter dated May twenty-seventh, the Chamber welcomed government’s decision to resume publishing fuel price breakdowns, calling it a positive step that helps businesses and consumers better understand how prices are set. But the Chamber says that transparency alone isn’t enough. They point out that while fuel taxes have dropped slightly in percentage terms, the actual dollar amount of those taxes hasn’t changed much, meaning consumers aren’t feeling the full benefit when global oil prices fall. And that, they argue, continues to drive up the cost of doing business, transportation, and everyday living across the country. To address this, the Chamber is now urging government to consider short-term relief measures, including a temporary reduction in fuel excise taxes or other targeted interventions to lower pump prices. This latest push builds on an earlier request made back in April, when the Chamber first called for clearer information on how fuel prices are calculated, including taxes, fees, and other costs that make up the final price at the pump. While acknowledging government’s fiscal challenges, the Chamber says it’s ready to work together on solutions that balance national revenue needs with economic stability. For now, both sides appear open to dialogue, but for consumers and businesses feeling the squeeze, the call is clear: bring down the cost of fuel.
