Can Pablo Cawich Survive the Mira Millions Fallout?

Mayor Pablo Cawich believes his team has done enough to earn another term in Belmopan, but one controversy could complicate that path. Cawich and his current slate are campaigning on plans to upgrade the city’s infrastructure and strengthen its business sector. He also insists their support remains as strong as it was when they won in 2024. But with Area Representative Oscar Mira still closely aligned with the mayor and appearing prominently at his recent endorsement, questions remain about whether the controversy known as the “Mira Millions” scandal could weigh down Cawich’s campaign. Today, we asked the mayor whether he is concerned.

“Well, it is a reality that he is the area representative of Belmopan. It is also a reality that he is my PUP brother. It is unfortunate what has transpired and what he is going through. But that is something for a higher level. I need to ensure that I do what is needed for the progress and development of the city. As mentioned, he is the area representative and I need to collaborate with him, as I do with other ministers and other organizations that are nonpolitical. I have to be willing and able to work with every single person.”

“But do you think he is a liability for your bid?”

“I can’t focus on that. I have to stay focused and continue moving Belmopan forward.”

“Have you given any thought to keep him out of the frame until the municipal elections is over?”

“That is not something I have a decision in. I have to ensure that I display to the residents of Belmopan that this is the best team, with it is and that this team is committed to ensuring, transparency, accountability and progress for the people of Belmopan.”
