Where Were Pablo Cawich’s Two Thousand Supporters?

The numbers were supposed to send a message, but instead, they are raising questions about the PUP’s political strength in Belmopan. Mayor Pablo Cawich and his team reportedly hoped to attract two thousand supporters to their endorsement convention a few weeks ago. Information reaching News Five placed the turnout closer to three hundred, but Cawich strongly disputes that figure. He says about five hundred people attended and argues that the crowd only appeared small because it was spread across a large park. So, was it simply a case of misleading appearances, or is the PUP struggling to energize voters in the Capital City?

“When it comes to the two thousand, which keeps getting referenced, I stated that we were targeting. I did not say that we were expecting. Again, words like to be twisted. But, I have to disagree with your count. Based on our estimations and the sales of the products we did see that there was approximately around five hundred people. Because of the size of the park and the lighting of the park, people were scattered all over the place, so you did not really see that large gathering. That is beside the fact. There are other factors as well that we believe contributed to the smaller turnout. But, that is something that is in the past and we know the support is there and we are consistently reminded by supporters and residents that they are on our side. So, I don’t rely on single events like that.”
