Opposition Leader Breaks Silence Following Historic Loss in Toledo East

Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow is speaking out, two days after the United Democratic Party experienced a historic defeat at the polls in Toledo East. As we have reported, Doctor Osmond Martinez secured seventy percent of the ballots cast on Wednesday. The United Democratic Party has never lost that badly in the constituency. We tried speaking with the opposition leader on Wednesday night at the counting station, but he avoided the media and left the area hours before the counting was concluded. Today, he called a press conference to answer some questions. The first was, what happened? Barrow predicted a victory for the United Democratic Party in the by-election. But, as we now know, that was not the case. He made a similar prediction for the municipals in March that also did not come to past. So, is Barrow deluding himself into thinking the U.D.P. is battle ready? Here is how he responded to that question.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

“It is not the outcome that we had hoped for, but I thank the candidate and his team for putting forward a valiant effort. I congratulate Osmond Martinez and his team. They did what they had to do and the people decided that they want Mr. Martinez to represent them in the House of Representatives. As the leader of this great United Democratic Party, I have a responsibility to project confidence. I have a responsibility to fight for every seat. There is not one seat that I can just say we will lie down. Certainly, there were many factors that led to a pathway to victory.  But in politics, what you see and what you get don’t always correlate. But the fact that there was a division, we all know there was a division within the People’s United Party, split in three ways. You had the Galvez faction that, you know, he wants to be a rep. You had the Melhem Espat faction. Where they were totally devastated by the convention lose similar to Eliva where she’s railing up On the Facebook right now saying that you know she was shafted. And so those divisions were very real and it was our hope, where we’ve seen a collaboration those forces be fruitful before as with the municipal elections. Because the results in municipal elections were not like this, we actually won the first recount and then lost by twenty. You know, it was a different candidate.  We cannot discount the fact that you have a government with millions of dollars in resources. We helped thousands of people in Toledo East. I could tell you that for a fact. You know, school papers, medical bills, all types of help that the people desperately need. But the government has the power to triple that to quadruple that. Um, but you know, nobody owes anybody a vote.”

Does Toledo East Loss Reveal Barrow’s Weakness as U.D.P. Leader?

Opposition Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow was also asked if the party’s recent defeat at the polls affects his credibility to lead the U.D.P. to victory in the upcoming general elections. He pointed back to the losing days of the People’s United Party, while contending that the pendulum has swung in the Briceño administration’s favor. However, Barrow is confident that U.D.P. will soon have its turn back in office. He was also asked if he thought about resigning after witnessing the results of the Toledo East by-election.

Paul Lopez

“How do you think this loss affects your credibility as a leader to lead the United Democratic Party to victory in the general elections?”

                       Moses “Shyne” Barrow

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

“It is really absurd to me that the leader whose name is not on the ballot, you’re asking me about me before you ask me about the candidate.”

Reporter

“So what are you saying? Who is to blame?”

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

“It is we all share the burden. But what I’m telling you is politics is about time. So, we are in opposition. John Briceño lost.  Francis Fonseca lost three terms, three consecutive terms, 2008, 2012, and 2015. It is normal. Dean Barrow, the right honorable, I think the greatest prime minister we’ve ever had lost two consecutive terms, ‘98 and 2005, sorry, 2003. It is par for course, right?”

Reporter

“So then U.D.P. will continue to lose.”

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

Sir, it is a matter of time. U.D.P. will continue to fight. I don’t look at it the way you look at it. I am resilient. I am focused. The issues are there, but we have to keep fighting this idea. The historical pattern, the historical data is  two terms for the P.U.P. For me, it was three terms that they had to wait for the pendulum to swing. The pendulum swung in their way, and we have to fight every day to swing it back. This idea, this idea, no matter who you put in this seat, it will still be a matter of time. No one else that wanted to be in the seat had the resources to fight. None of them.”

Reporter

“Did you consider or contemplate resignation?”

Moses “Shyne” Barrow

“Absolutely not. That is absurd. That is ridiculous. I am not John Briceno. I am not going to quit on my party. I am a fighter. I am going to keep fighting. That is one constituency. That is not a reflection of the wider party.”

Dennis “Desho” Williams Did Not Convince Voters in Toledo East

Opposition Leader Barrow went on to explain that he funded the U.D.P. candidate’s entire campaign from his personal coffers. On the other hand, there are suggestions that Williams did not present himself as a candidate prepared to win the by-election. Unlike his opponent, Williams was not easily accessible to the media. Some may argue that he was not even accessible to voters. He was either too busy running errands or avoiding the spotlight. Today, Barrow revealed that while he and Williams now share a close friendship, he initially supported former P.G Mayor Ashton Mckenzie to run in Toledo East. He contended that it was Patrick Faber and John Saldivar who thrusted Williams into the position.

                       Moses “Shyne” Barrow

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition

“I did everything. I spent every dollar, every dollar. You know, when I reached out to donors they said, you know, Shyne general elections we coming big, but by-election, how are you going to ask us for by election money and that’s a P.U.P. seat? That seat was won during Dean Barrow’s time. So, I said, okay, no problem. And I took a significant amount of the reserves that I have. And I made it available to the candidate and to the team. That is my personal fortune. And that is my responsibility to make sure that every dollar is provided and then there’s accountability for the dollars. And I did that, and the rest was up to the candidate and the campaign manager Cranka Polonio who’s very popular there as he was a candidate that we fielded for the municipals. So, I gave everybody what they needed because then I don’t want to be accused of taking over and doing things my way.  Whatever finance was asked for, the finance was provided. But let me say it again so that you understand, you know, brother Desho is a friend and a brother, and you know all he has to do is learn from this. Pick himself up, look in the mirror and see everything that went wrong. And if he feels that he has an opportunity there, he’ll keep working and keep going because the pendulum swings. The candidate has to be able to convince the people that he is the person that they want. The candidate was elected in an endorsement convention. The application process was open. And then let me tell you this. You want to talk about the candidate? It was John Saldivar and Patrick Farber that came together to put that candidate there as caretaker. That is my friend and brother. No, so I am not distancing myself from him, but I’m just telling you everybody wants to criticize the candidate and throw the candidate under the bus now. When I was supporting Ashton Mckenzie we went to a constituency meeting and John Saldivar and Patrick Farber came together and they elected brother Desho.”

Belize City Launches E-Bus Service and Charging Depot

A significant milestone was achieved today as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics, and E-Governance (MPUELE), the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Transport through the Department of Transport (DoT), and the Belize City Council (BCC), with funding support from the European Union (EU), launched the e-bus service and charging depot of the E-Mobility Pilot Project.

The charging depot, located at the corner of Dean and Regent Streets in Belize City, is equipped with two 220-volt chargers capable of powering the two e-buses, ensuring efficient and reliable service. The bus service is set to begin on Monday, July 22, 2024, providing citizens with a clean and sustainable public transportation option within the city.

“E-Mobility – Our citizens deserve this,” stated Mayor Bernard Wagner. “Our community deserves this, and most importantly, our planet needs this. Today’s launch is as bold as it is electric!”

The initiative aligns with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the UNDP’s Belize Office’s Country Programme. UNDP’s Resident Representative, Kishan Khoday, emphasized the importance of partnerships and innovation in achieving a greener and more inclusive future while addressing climate change.

“Today illustrates the spirit of collaboration and innovation that can be achieved when government departments, development partners, the private sector, and civil society unite towards the national NDC climate plan,” said Khoday.

Aniceto Rodriguez-Ruiz, the EU’s Head of Cooperation, highlighted the role of international cooperation in tackling global environmental challenges. “We are proud to be the first friend and partner of Belize to financially invest in such a modern, smart, green, and clean transport option.”

During the inauguration, guests toured the depot and experienced the intra-city route on the electric buses, witnessing the benefits of e-mobility and its potential to transform the city’s transportation system. The unveiling of the bus wrapping design showcased its brand identity, aimed at raising awareness and fostering a connection between the e-bus service and its environmental benefits.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics, and E-Governance, remarked, “The effect of climate change has forced governments worldwide to refocus their energies. The Government of Belize, with this ambitious E-Mobility Pilot Project, underscores our commitment to reducing carbon footprints, enhancing air quality, promoting renewable energy, and fostering a cleaner and greener future for all our citizens. This project is part of the smart energy solutions and energy policies promoted by the Ministry.”

Through the Electric Mobility Pilot Project, Belize is advancing towards sustainable urban transportation, reducing emissions, and providing cleaner air for the country. Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Transport, stated, “In alignment with the United Nations Charter, this marks the initial step in decarbonizing Belize’s public transport sector. Our goal is to meet the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) climate target by reducing 117 ktCO2e annually from the transportation sector.”

Biodiverse Landscapes Fund Launches in Belize

The British High Commission, in partnership with the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change celebrated the launch of the project “Resilient and Biodiverse Landscapes of Northern Mesoamerica,” funded through the Biodiverse Landscapes Fund (BLF).

The launch event, held on July 18th, was followed by a site visit to the Valley of Peace Community Centre in Cayo District.

The project is assisting the development of a Community Climate Resilience Plan and building capacity for regenerative agriculture, fire management, and sustainable livelihoods through training, microgrants, and scholarships. These initiatives are part of the Belize Maya Forest Trust’s Community Stewards Program.

Financed by UK International Development funds from the UK Government, the BLF supports poverty reduction, biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation, and adaptation across six biologically diverse landscapes worldwide, including the Mesoamerica Landscape, which spans areas in Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. In Belize, the BLF will invest approximately USD $3.2 million from September 2023 to October 2029. Activities are being implemented through a consortium of organizations, including the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Belize Maya Forest Trust (BMFT), Programme for Belize (PfB), Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD), and the Julian Cho Society. The BLF supports these organizations in protecting and conserving the Selva Maya Forest in Belize, one of the great forests of the Mesoamerica Landscape.

The program is based on four key components: securing land and resource rights, developing forest-based income streams, and implementing climate-adapted rural development with proper social safeguards; ensuring well-governed conservation areas and targeted protection activities for endangered species; building consensus, fostering multisector collaboration, and enacting policy reforms to incentivize forest protection and strengthen IPLC rights; and implementing a monitoring and evaluation framework to assess impact and guide decision-making.

Microsoft Global Disruption: CrowdStrike Update Sparks Massive Tech Outages

On Friday morning, a flawed software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike triggered widespread outages across Microsoft systems, impacting critical sectors globally. Banks, stock exchanges, airlines, hospitals, and various public services were severely disrupted, with over one thousand and three hundred flights grounded in the U.S. alone, major European airports halting landings, and over twenty-five thousand flights delayed across the world, reported CBS News.

In a statement earlier on Friday, Microsoft said, “We remain committed in treating this event with the highest priority and urgency while we continue to address the lingering impact for the Microsoft 365 apps that are in a degraded state.”

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz acknowledged the issue stemmed from an update to its Falcon Sensor software, which caused Microsoft systems to crash, but clarified it was not a cyberattack. The glitch affected systems dependent on Microsoft 365 apps, forcing manual operations at airports and healthcare facilities worldwide.

Efforts to resolve the issue are underway, but the full recovery process is expected to take days. Microsoft and CrowdStrike are working to restore services, but disruptions are expected to persist across global operations. The incident highlights the interconnected nature of global technology and the significant repercussions of software vulnerabilities on everyday business operations.

P.U.P. Maintains Hold Over Toledo East in Decisive Victory

The People’s United Party is celebrating another landslide victory after soundly defeating its political opponents in a by-election for the Toledo East constituency on Wednesday.  Several weeks of active campaigning saw three politicians, including Doctor Osmond Martinez, Dennis Williams and Wil Maheia, canvassing an area of the district to gain the support of voters.  When the final ballot was counted, former C.E.O. Martinez had cemented his victory by a wide margin.  Official results shared by the Elections and Boundaries Commission this morning indicate that the P.U.P. candidate trounced the more formidable of his opponents by a ratio of three-to-one.  Seventy percent of the four thousand, six hundred and seventy votes cast were in favor of Doctor Martinez whose stronghold appears to be Bella Vista Village.  He garnered three thousand, two hundred and sixty-nine votes.  By contrast, the United Democratic Party candidate, Dennis Williams, received one thousand, one hundred and fifty-nine votes, while P.N.P. candidate Wil Maheia turned in a meager two hundred and two votes.  The voter turnout for the by-election stood at a little over sixty percent.  With the resounding victory, the People’s United Party maintains its hold over Toledo East.

Dr. Osmond Martinez Receives 70% of Votes Casted in Toledo East

On Wednesday, voters of Toledo East visited various polling stations across the constituency to cast their ballots in favor of their candidate of choice.  By the close of polls at six p.m., over four thousand, six hundred votes were to be counted at the Toledo Community College.  It was the culmination of weeks of groundwork by the mass parties.  But it was a show of force by the People’s United Party whose machinery included a host of ministers, area representatives, standard bearers, and C.E.O.s and all hands were on deck to deliver this victory. News Five’s Paul Lopez takes a closer look.

Paul Lopez, Reporting

It was a sixty-fourth birthday that Prime Minister John Briceño will remember. A full bite from a birthday cake that PUP supporters in Bella Vista Village surprised him with, and a commanding victory for Dr. Osmond Martinez in Toledo East.

               Prime Minister John Briceño

Prime Minister John Briceño

“This is the best gift I could ever get for my birthday and for that I am very grateful to the people of Toledo East and Osmond Martinez to be able to deliver such a decisive victory for the party.”

A decisive victory indeed. Dr. Osmond Martinez secured seventy percent of the ballots cast, defeating his U.D.P. opponent by a ratio of three votes to one. Wil Maheia received only four percent of the total votes.

Prime Minister John Briceño

“When you look at the municipal elections sixty-one out if sixty-seven and March was even bigger than in 2020 and 2021 and now here is another election where we win three to one, it is a mandate. The people are saying they are satisfied of the work of the P.U.P. government.”

                    Dr. Osmond Martinez

Dr. Osmond Martinez, Newly-Elected Area Rep.

“We had our targets and we worked towards it. We did a lot of data science analysis. We were not worried about the margin. Our main objective is to win.”

From the look of it, the People’s United Party did not spare a single area representative, standard bearer, CEO, or municipal body. The who’s who of the P.U.P. were in Toledo working to deliver the big win. The same can be said of the United Democratic Party whose executive, senators, standard bearers, and street soldiers were all on the ground putting in work. But, why this show of muscle for a by-election in a single constituency ahead of a general election next year?

Paul Lopez

“Don’t you think this is an overkill for a by election?”

                             Kareem Musa

Kareem Musa, Area Representative, Caribbean Shores

“No, it is absolutely not. I think it is very important for us as a party to come and show support to doctor Osmond.”

                           Henry Charles Usher

Henry Charles Usher, P.U.P. Chairman

“We are all creatures of politics. We are political creatures. We live for these moments. I don’t see it as any type or over kill or anything you said there. This is about his colleagues from across the country supporting him, supporting the people of Toledo East.”

Hugo Patt, Deputy Leader, U.D.P.

“We have thankfully people with experience that have done this before. And here in Bella Vista I can say we have a lot of youths taking up the helm to assist the party from that end.”

But the U.D.P. began packing up and leaving Bella Vista even before the polls closed. As if the writing was already on the wall, the opposition’s machinery even took a moment to greet Martinez. Party Leader, Moses “Shyne” Barrow exited the counting station at eight- thirty p.m., hours before the official results were announced. He was not seen or heard from for the remainder of the evening.

Dr. Osmond Martinez

“We won everywhere, including Punta Gorda. I was well embraced and for the first time in history we won Monkey River. The Maya communities we did excellent there. When you look at their numbers it is almost eighty-five percent of the voters from there.”

Paul Lopez

“I see the prime Minister behind is beaming with joy like a proud father. What was the initial discussion had with him after realizing you won this won?”

Dr. Osmond Martinez

“This is his gift. We worked together and it shows that the People’s United Party under Prime Minister John Briceno is stronger than ever. This shows the unity of the party. We had support from each and every Minister In some way or the other. All I can say is that the P.U.P. is stronger than ever after four years.”
