CCC Teachers Walk Out Over Unpaid Salaries
Frustration at Corozal Community College reached a breaking point today. Teachers cut classes short, and the school issued a public notice asking parents to collect their children, and by two o’clock, the campus was empty. The reason was unpaid salaries. The college confirmed in a statement that teachers walked out due to not receiving their end-of-month pay. Sources tell us this action stems from ongoing tensions between the school’s administration and its finance officer. We understand this isn’t the first time payments have been delayed. Teachers allege that the finance officer has repeatedly delayed disbursements and has now affected their salaries directly. We’re told that staff had been in a passive stance for some time, but the continued delays pushed them to take action. Over the weekend, CCC teachers reported the issue to the Belize National Teachers’ Union, and we understand today’s walkout was carried out with the union’s support. Teachers are now calling for a formal meeting with the School Board to address the matter, warning that without resolution, the problem is likely to continue. The college declined to provide a comment at this time. We’ve also contacted the BNTU president, Nadia Caliz, and are awaiting her response. We’ll continue to follow this story.
