CCVC: We Weren’t Consulted on Split Access Changes
The Caye Caulker Village Council (CCVC) says it is taking concerns over access to the Split seriously following reports that the area’s new management approached ferry operators about the matter without consulting the council first.
The CCVC confirmed it is in communication with the management of the Lazy Lizard and representatives connected to the property and is working to arrange a meeting to address the issue directly. The Council says that after an initial conversation with management, it made clear that it should have been consulted before any discussions or arrangements were made with ferry operators regarding access to the area.
The Council says that, to its knowledge, no one has actually been charged or agreed to pay an access fee, despite being approached by Split’s new management. It stressed that it, too, was left out of those conversations and is now working to clarify the situation.
The Council says it has no intention of changing or restricting the public’s existing access to either the western street and access area or the eastern beach area. At the same time, it says respecting property owners’ rights, and keeping communication and collaboration with those owners a priority, remains part of how it plans to work through the matter.
