Central Bank Unveils New National Symbols Coin Series

Belizeans will begin seeing a new set of coins in circulation this September after the Central Bank of Belize unveiled its National Symbols Coin Series.

The redesigned coins, minted by the Royal Canadian Mint, feature images celebrating Belize’s national identity. The one-dollar coin displays the map of Belize, while the remaining denominations showcase the country’s national symbols. The series complements the National Heroes banknotes introduced in 2025.

The Central Bank says the new coins will circulate alongside the existing coins bearing the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which will remain legal tender. There is no need for the public to exchange or deposit current coins, as they will be phased out naturally over time.

Although the coins maintain the same sizes as the current denominations, they incorporate several changes. They are now made from nickel-plated and bronze-plated steel to improve durability and reduce production costs. The one-cent coin features a unique ten-sided edge, while the one-dollar coin has a distinctive bronze finish.

To commemorate the launch, the Central Bank will also issue a limited-edition painted fifty-cent collector’s coin featuring the Mahogany Tree. The commemorative coin will be sold as a numismatic item and will not enter general circulation.
