Church Mobilises Hope Not Dope’ Campaign Against Weed Referendum
The people of Caye Caulker will face a decision in a matter of weeks that could change life on their island. On October 8, voters will decide if cannabis should be legalised. The referendum was triggered after islanders collected enough signatures to demand the vote.
The proposal is aimed at creating a regulated and taxable cannabis industry on the island. Supporters argue it could generate jobs and revenue.
Meanwhile, critics argue it carries risks for the wider country.
The Church is one that has taken a firm stance against the move by stepping in with its ‘Hope Not Dope’ campaign to convince residents to reject the proposal.
Church Senator Louis Wade Jr told News 5 that as of Wednesday night, teams were already organised among island residents that “will be able to push the entire campaign.”
He added that the major concern for many is whether Caye Caulker should become the centre of the marijuana industry. According to Wade, the answer is “a resounding no.”
The Prime Minister John Briceño and other government officials have also warned about national implications if the island moves forward with legalisation.
