Cop Pleads Guilty to Four Counts of Sex With a Minor
Twenty-nine-year-old Belize Police Constable Dexter Diego is behind bars awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to four counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
The victim was 13 when the first offence happened and 14 when the other three occurred.
Diego entered the guilty plea in the High Court before Justice Nigel Pilgrim on Monday. The trial ended within less than an hour.
Diego was represented by attorney Hurl Hamilton.
According to agreed facts presented in court, Diego was a family friend of the victim. He became acquainted with the minor in 2022, and over the course of roughly 10 months, the two developed a relationship that the minor’s mother was unaware of.
The offences happened while Diego was employed as a police constable.
The first incident occurred between December 31, 2022, and February 1, 2023, while the minor was babysitting relatives. The remaining counts occurred between February and March 2023, with the final count occurring in March 2026 while Diego was in uniform.
Justice Pilgrim has deferred sentencing to September 8, 2026, and ordered a Prison Report, a Social Inquiry Report, and a Victim Impact Statement ahead of that date.
