News Five also caught up with attorney Tiffany Cadle, who specializes in intellectual property law. We asked her to break down the issue from a business angle, especially as concerns grow over counterfeit goods. Cadle reminded us that protecting intellectual property isn’t just about logos and brand names. It’s also about the systems in place to shield both businesses and consumers from harm. She also weighed in on the role of customs in this situation and the bigger picture it reveals. With A&R holding the exclusive rights to distribute JanSport in Belize, Cadle says safeguarding that brand is more important than ever.

“They should have some kind of authentication to the products that are coming in and I do think this is on the end of customs where customs are going to say wait hold on let me check that these things are you know and most of the times that is how they are caught they are the first port of entry the entry through where these things come in is customs they are the ones who are supposed to stop these things from entering in the market but of course you know resources are limited and its difficult to do all of that. Sometimes in life that’s how you get positive results something negative have to happen and then it turns around to be something positive and I applaud Car Guys I applaud A&R for stepping up and all the other businesses who are now stepping up so we can say this is a positive result from something negative but I still don’t think that A&R should have been put in a position where they have to make an apology to the people.”
