Family Defends Christopher Witzel After Sudden Death

The family of twenty-seven-year-old Christopher Witzel is speaking out following his sudden death on Monday night, insisting he had no connection to the July twelfth shooting in Orange Walk. Relatives say Witzel died from kidney and liver failure after being taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he complained of severe pain. They strongly dispute reports suggesting police transported him to the hospital or that he was under investigation for the Orange Walk incident. His mother, Sonia Fuentes, has appealed on social media for respect during the family’s grief, acknowledging her son’s past mistakes but asking that he be remembered in peace. Police have not disclosed the official cause of death, and the circumstances remain under investigation. Witzel, however, was known to authorities. In 2024, he was arrested during a State of Emergency and charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and other offenses. He was also detained while investigators probed a separate shooting. Earlier, in 2018, he faced multiple charges including three counts of attempted murder after a gang-related shooting in Belize City that injured three people, including a woman and a minor. Authorities continue to investigate and have not released the names of the two suspects detained following the incident.
