Family of Slain Doctor Calls for Justice
The family of slain physician Dr. Naun Bonilla is calling on authorities to leave no stone unturned in the investigation into his murder.
In a statement to News 5, Bonilla’s family urged law enforcement and the government to pursue the case with “urgency, transparency, and determination,” insisting that justice must be served.
“Justice must be served—not only for Dr. Naun Bonilla and for our family, but for every citizen who deserves safety, security, and confidence in the rule of law,” the family said.
The statement comes amid growing public outrage over the brazen daylight attack that claimed the life of the 36-year-old doctor on Friday morning in Belmopan.
Bonilla’s relatives remembered him as more than a medical professional, describing him as a devoted husband, father, son, and brother whose life was dedicated to helping others.
“Dr. Bonilla was more than a physician. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, and a man whose life was dedicated to serving others,” the statement read. “He committed himself to healing and saving lives, and his loss at just 36 years old has left a profound void in our family and in our nation.”
“This tragedy has shaken us deeply, but it has also shaken the wider community, particularly those in the medical profession who dedicate their lives to caring for others,” the statement continued. “No family should have to endure such pain, and no professional serving society should have to fear becoming a victim of violence.”
Police say Bonilla was driving along Ramirez Avenue in the Las Flores area of Belmopan when another vehicle overtook him and stopped in front of his vehicle. An armed man reportedly exited the vehicle and fired multiple shots, fatally wounding the doctor.
At the time of the attack, Bonilla’s five-year-old daughter was seated in the back seat of the vehicle. She was not injured.
Investigators have since obtained surveillance footage and are pursuing leads as they work to determine a motive. Police have indicated that the information gathered so far does not suggest that Bonilla was involved in any criminal activity.
