Father Finds Son Stabbed, Clinging to Life

Tonight, a family in southern Belize is reeling after a brutal attack left a young man fighting for his life. It happened just after four o’clock on Monday afternoon. Twenty-two-year-old Gregory Makin was found bleeding at a bus stop in San Pedro, Columbia Village, stabbed multiple times. Police say they’ve detained a man who’s known to Makin, but the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Gregory was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital, where he’s currently in critical condition. News Five spoke with Gregory’s father, Jim Makin, who was the one to discover his son on the scene. He shared the emotional moment and the fear that gripped him as he tried to get help.

On the Phone: Jim Makin, Father of Stabbing Victim

“So I’m on my way to pick up my son. When I saw him, he was like suffering. He was not lying on the ground, but he was suffering. He was barely getting up. He was like struggling. He was like staggering. So I wonder what’s wrong with him. And I saw the bus was parked there, the bus of San Pedro, Colombia that usually leaved at like at four p.m. minutes to four. So I wonder when I saw my son I said my son. So I pick him up and he had a lot of stab wounds on his body. He has on his side and his chest, on his back, and his hand. So I pretty much I asked the bus driver to take me to the San Antonio Polyclinic and thanks to the driver. He transported my son there and get him medical attention and then transport from there to Punta Gorda, and from Punta Gorda to Dangriga. Then we got from Dangriga to Belmopan and here I am in Belmopan right now. So my son is in unstable condition. He’s stabbed, there’s a hole in his right lung, part of the spinal cord is cut.  Abdomen is cut as well okay. He’s in a critical condition right now at the hospital in Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan. So I am hoping, the best, hoping I can get through this. He wasn’t robbed. He doesn’t have money with him. He just to take the money to passage to go and come back and off of nowhere, he went and did it. There is no a quarrel between him and my son. There is no dispute. There is nothing like that. All of a sudden he just came and did it. I asked the question why me? But here I am suffering from all this thing that happened to my son.”
