Government Pushes NHI Reform Amid Oversight Fears
The government is pushing forward with new National Health Insurance legislation that would replace the current commission with a more powerful NHI Authority, one designed to take the lead on delivering services. But that shift is raising concerns. Opposition Leader Tracy Panton is questioning whether the proposed structure truly serves Belizeans or concentrates too much control in the hands of a few. Prime Minister John Briceño and Health Minister Kevin Bernard are defending the plan, but as the bill moves forward, the real fight may be over trust, oversight, and who gets to call the shots in Belize’s healthcare future.

“Belize already has positive experience with the NHI pilot program it shows that increase access to primary care, improved patient satisfaction, better health outcomes in participating regions. This bill builds on what works, scaling it nationally rather than reinventing the system. A healthier population leads to a higher productivity, reduced absenteeism, lower healthcare burdens and businesses can benefit from a work force that is health and insured.”

“It is our duty as legislatures to ensure that any policy decision that we institute and any laws we put in place that is passed by this house serves the best interest of our Belizean people and not merely the interest of those who occupy the seat of power. One of the most troubling aspects of this bill is the absences of sufficient evidence to justify the structure being proposed.”

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health and Wellness
“The leader of the opposition makes it seems as if NHI is replacing the functions and roles of the Ministry of Health. Let me be absolutely clear and for the clarification to the Belizean people, the regulatory functions of all health systems in this country fall under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and Wellness.”
NHI covers citizens nationwide, across all six districts.
