Indian Creek Conflict Grows Over Forest Material

A dispute over bush sticks has sparked rising tensions inside Indian Creek Village. At the center of it all is a resident who says he got the green light, from both a private landowner and the Forestry Department to harvest the material. But when he tried to move the bush sticks to his property, he was met with opposition from other villagers, bringing operations to a halt. Now, what should have been a straightforward process has exposed deeper divisions within the community. Village Chairman Domingo Choc explains how the situation unfolded and why it’s become such a flashpoint.

On the Phone: Domingo Choc, Chairman, Indian Creek Village

“The most recent incident involves a resident who had secured all necessary permits from the Forestry Department. He hired me to transport his bush sticks for use in constructing his house. Despite processing a valid permit, the alcalde attempted to confiscate the material, claiming that the Forestry Department permit was not valid. It was also surprising, the MLA spokesperson was present and appeared to support that position yesterday. As a result, I was prevented from leaving the area for approximately two hours. Eventually the spokesperson informed me that they will allow that resident to take the house rafters and continue to build his house. This situation escalated because they attempted confiscate material that had been obtained under a valid Forestry Department permit.”

MLA Spokesperson Christina Coc will provide News Five with her perspective on the matter on Friday.
