Bringing Mandarin to Belize
Learning Mandarin is becoming more accessible to Belizeans through an ongoing program at the University of Belize (UB).
Joining Open Your Eyes was Angelina Dong, Mandarin Instructor at UB, who highlighted the course and the opportunities that can come from learning the language.
Dong explained that while Belizeans have opportunities to travel to Taiwan to study Mandarin, the UB program allows students and working professionals to begin learning the language locally.
The program runs year-round, with courses offered each semester. Students who complete the program can receive a Mandarin certificate, adding another skill to their résumé.
Making Mandarin Easier to Learn

While Mandarin can seem intimidating, Dong explained that its grammar is relatively logical, with no grammatical gender and verbs that generally remain the same across tenses.
One of the biggest challenges for beginners is mastering the language’s four tones, since changing the tone can change a word’s meaning.
To make lessons more engaging, Dong incorporates songs, pop culture, everyday conversations, Taiwanese traditions, memes, and slang into her teaching.
She also uses stories and cultural context to help students understand and remember Mandarin expressions and vocabulary.
Learning to Speak and Write
The course covers more than pronunciation, with students also learning to read and write Chinese characters.
Dong explained that she breaks characters down stroke by stroke and introduces their individual components, helping students understand how characters are formed and connected to their meanings.
During the interview, she demonstrated how characters representing a person and wood can combine to express the idea of resting against a tree.
Opening International Opportunities
Mandarin can also create opportunities beyond the classroom.
Dong highlighted the ICDF scholarship, which can provide opportunities for students to study in Taiwan and pursue a master’s degree with scholarship support.
The program therefore offers Belizeans a chance to develop a new skill locally while potentially opening doors to further education and international opportunities.
Registration Still Open
Although the current course has already begun, registration is still ongoing. Interested individuals can enroll through the University of Belize’s language center and complete the online registration process.
The course is also available online, making it accessible to those who cannot attend classes on campus.
