A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Cuba region at approximately 12:00 p.m. today, with the epicentre located roughly 118 kilometres west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, at a depth of 33 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface. Tremors were felt by residents across parts of Belize.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) and the National Meteorological Service of Belize moved quickly to assess the situation. NEMO issued an informational bulletin that advised residents that there is no significant tsunami threat from the earthquake and that no action is required in Belize.

Both agencies are continuing to monitor the situation in coordination with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), which provides regional early warning support for seismic and tsunami threats.

No casualties or significant damage have been reported in Cuba so far, but authorities are continuing to gather information from some areas, according to Cuban State Media
