More Flights to Belize: BermudAir Launches Three-Day Weekly Service
Belize is expanding its air connectivity with South Florida as BermudAir landed in Belize City today on its inaugural flight from Fort Lauderdale. This latest flight adds another route ahead of the peak tourism season.
The airline will operate flights between Fort Lauderdale and Belize City every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The launch is part of ongoing efforts by the Belize Tourism Board’s Air Development Committee to attract airlines and secure new routes.
Flights from Tampa, Boston, Raleigh-Durham and Orlando start in December, according to Nicole Usher Solano, CEO of the Ministry of Tourism.
She said the additional seats should help bring more visitors into the country. Solano estimated the aircraft has a capacity of about 75 passengers and believed the inaugural flight arrived at roughly 50% capacity.
“That’s very good for their inaugural flight,” Solano said.
Meanwhile, Tourism Director Evan Tillett said expanding air access is critical to the industry. “Any new air route is significant for the destination because air connectivity is the lifeblood of tourism,” he said. “When you see a flight land in a destination in Belize, it is definitely a lot of background work that takes place, and it’s a team effort by members of the BTB, the Air Development Committee or Air Development consultant, and of course, our airline partners.”
BermudAir’s inaugural flight comes a week after Discover Airlines introduced a new direct air link between Germany and Belize. According to Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler, the Government committed about two million dollars to secure Belize’s first direct flight from continental Europe: $1.2 million in upfront guarantees and $800,000 in marketing support.
Mahler said such guarantees became “a must” after COVID. He added that the payoff will reach beyond tourism by generating millions in economic activity and giving Belizean exporters a direct gateway to European markets.
