NEMO Assists Families Impacted by Historic Belmopan Flooding

NEMO moved into emergency mode on Saturday as heavy rains triggered historic flooding in Belmopan and surrounding areas. The organization activated its emergency operations center in the capital and has had teams on the ground since then, assessing damage and helping residents hit hardest by the floodwaters. Tonight, National Emergency Coordinator Daniel Mendez shares how the response is unfolding and what support is reaching affected families.

“After noting the rainfall, flood conditions were registered in Belmopan which you have seen the images of. As a result, the Belmopan emergency operation center was activated and works began with the Belmopan City Council and has continued up to today. NEMO remains in close coordination with the National Meteorological Service and the National Hydrological Service. Our district emergency centers and other authorities to monitor evolving conditions. In Belmopan we have been conducting assessments over the weekend and we have been providing assistance to communities and persons affected by flooding. We are also continuing our work to determine immediate impact and the needs of persons in these areas. The information gathered from this assessments will guide response and recovery and ensure assistance is directed to communities and persons most in need.”

 

The National Emergency Management Organization had conducted over a hundred assessments as of this morning.
