NEMO on Alert as Heavy Rainfall Continues

The National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) says its teams remain on high alert across the country as heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of Belize, with particular attention on incidents reported in the Stann Creek District.

National Emergency Coordinator Daniel Mendez said local teams have already been deployed to assist in affected areas, while national monitoring continues in coordination with weather and hydrology authorities. “Our teams across the country have been on alert. We have been monitoring, along with the Met Service and the hydrology service, the rainfall,” Mendez said.

He confirmed that Stann Creek has been one of the districts experiencing impacts from the recent weather system, prompting local response efforts. “So, what we have been noticing is that there have been a few incidents in the Stann Creek District. Our Stann Creek coordinators have been out assisting in that regard,” he explained.

The update comes amid reports of widespread heavy rainfall across Belize over the past 24 hours, with several areas in central and northern Belize recording significant accumulations, raising concerns about localized flooding and saturated ground conditions.

Earlier assessments from meteorological and hydrological authorities indicated rainfall totals exceeding eight inches in parts of central Belize, with warnings that additional heavy showers could bring another four to eight inches in some areas over the next 24 hours. Hydrologists have also cautioned that steep terrain and river systems could increase runoff and flooding risks in multiple regions.

Mendez said NEMO remains prepared for any escalation but has not yet needed to fully activate its emergency response system. “There is always a potential for further activation of the system. But at this point there has not been the need,” he said.

“As the information comes in, the rest of the country remains on the alert. So, all our offices are aware and have been making communications with the different components of the system,” Mendez said.

He stressed that NEMO stands ready to respond quickly if conditions worsen.
