Opposition Proposes National Border Security Strategy

The Opposition has often been accused of criticizing the Briceño administration without offering practical alternatives. But during Friday’s House meeting, Opposition Leader Tracy Panton sought to change that narrative. Pointing to growing security threats along Belize’s western, southern and northern borders, Panton challenged the government to deliver a stronger, more coordinated response. She also called for the Opposition and social partners to help shape and execute that strategy, before presenting a six-point border-security plan of her own.

“ What is the opposition calling for exactly? There are six actions, if I may, Madam Speaker. First, a coordinated national border security plan. The government should set priorities for both borders, identify responsible agencies, establish deadlines, and consult all members of this house. Second, a properly costed assessment of urgent needs. This must cover personnel, vessels, vehicles. Communications, surveillance, infrastructure, maintenance, training, and operating costs. Third, Madam Speaker, stronger intelligence and investigative capacity. Agencies must share information securely, investigate criminal networks, follow illicit money, and that’s a big one.  They follow illicit money and work effectively with our regional partners. Fourth, Madam Speaker, protection against corruption. Allegations that officials are facilitating trafficking, leaking information or assisting criminal groups must be independently investigated. Fifth, Madam Speaker, practical protection for border communities. Residents and businesses need confidential reporting channels, timely responses, witness protection, community engagement, and opportunities for young people that reduce the risk of criminal recruitment. Six, Madam Speaker, regular parliamentary accountability. The responsible ministers ought to report or at least let us sit down and discuss what the implementation plan is.”
