Parents Upset After Closure of Special Ed. Class at Garden City Primary
Parents of students at Garden City Primary in Belmopan say they were blindsided by news that the school’s Special Education Class will no longer operate.
On Thursday night, parents were informed that the programme was being officially shut down and that their children would now have to transfer to another school. Many parents say the sudden decision is unfair and disruptive, especially since they had already purchased uniforms and paid school fees in preparation for the new school year.
A letter dated August 28th, 2025, signed by Principal Kevin Hall and Vice Principal Paul Chun, confirmed that the Special Education Class was being closed following a management decision. The assistant teacher who had been working with the special education students has been reassigned to teach Standard Four. The letter instructed her to clear the classroom of all special education materials to make space for a new group of students.
Parents, however, argue that the decision was poorly handled. “Nobody contacted us prior to being sent this message,” one parent told News 5. “We believe it is uncalled for. These kids are already used to their setting. Getting them settled in the class was already a task, and the teacher worked closely with us. Moving them to a different environment with new people will just set them back.”
The parent added, “Nobody considered the well-being of these kids. They are already looked at as different, and now they have to go to another school with the uniforms we already bought. We are worried about how this will affect them.”
We’ll keep following this story.
