Rental Dealer Charged Over Orange Walk Robbery

As government prepares to tighten the laws governing vehicle rentals, police have charged a Belize City dealer over a rental allegedly used in an Orange Walk robbery. Investigators say the dealer rented the vehicle to a group of men who went on to commit the crime. Police are now accusing him of participating in criminal activity, raising questions about what he knew before handing over the keys.

“Police have formally arrested and charged Teshaun Jones of Belize City for the offense of participation in a criminal activity in association with a gang. The arrest of Mr. Jones following the ongoing investigation into the robbery that occurred in Orange Walk whereby three male persons were observed on a vehicle, exiting a vehicle and proceeding to rob that proprietor of that item of jewelry. I would also like to take this opportunity to echo what the minister said in his address in relation to the ministry position in terms of revisiting the vehicle situation because the vehicle that was used in the robbery in Orange Walk was a rental vehicle and there are plenty rental vehicles used in the commission of these incidents. Certainly, we are looking at ways and the charge that was proffered against Mr. Jones in this incident was in relation to his participation in the provision of a particular vehicle that was used.”

Jones arrest comes at a time when authorities are reviewing legislation related to the rental of vehicles.
