Río Hondo Bridge to Close for Four Months

Cross-border movement between Belize and Mexico will be partly disrupted for four months as the Río Hondo International Bridge closes for major reconstruction. The bridge connects Subteniente López in Mexico with the Corozal Free Zone.

The shutdown begins May 1 and runs until August 31.

The Consulate of Belize in Chetumal, José Kelly, is advising Belizeans to plan ahead and adjust their travel arrangements early to avoid delays and disruption, especially for those who would normally use the Río Hondo crossing.

Kelly said official information shows the reconstruction is progressing according to schedule.

During the closure, immigration and customs services have been relocated to the new bridge, Chac-Temal International Bridge, “where they will handle the issuance of documents such as Regional Visitor Cards and oversee surveillance and inspection procedures for motor vehicles”, the notice added.

Mexico’s National Guard has been deployed to manage traffic flow and maintain border operations.

The reconstruction includes upgrades to the steel structure, deck slab, pedestrian walkways, retaining walls, and traffic signage.
